Who?  Anyone who is in the New York City area and is looking to pick up an eclectic collection of gifts for the special ones in your life.  It is also a lovely place to spend a few hours drinking and eating foods from New York and around the world.

What?  The Union Square Holiday Market is a collection of 150 vendors who come together under a holiday themed set up to display, extol and sell their wares.

How?  The market is located at Union Square right above the subway and you really can’t miss it.  For those who have been to the Union Square Farmer’s market, this is at the same location.  The market is open through December 24th daily.

Why?  For many a person out there, shopping and eating in one of the most amazing cities in the world is a perfect excuse to make your way to this holiday market.  From custom-made french truffles (“do not bite, let it melt” was our tasting instruction) to Turkish lamps,  unique maritime and religious pieces (“My boyfriend’s father used to be in the navy in India, is this from there?” was a question heard) to lovely bags crafted out of a single long zipper, from hot ginger tea from China to the infamous cookies from Momofuku, from handmade beauty scrubs and lotions with salt from the dead sea (look at how soft your skin feels after this treatment!) to tights painted with Japanese flowers and umbrellas, the list of items is endless.  To grab any last-minute gifts, head out here before December 24th.

Shop And Support Local Design Talent At TheMarketNYC

By Lakshmi:

Who?  Anyone shopping for holiday gifts in New York City or wants to peruse local talent in the Greenwich Village area.

What? TheMarketNYC is a pop up store that features local artists and their products.

How? The store is located at 159 Bleecker Street in New York City.  It is located in the heart of Greenwich Village.

Why?  The Greenwich Village area is home to a variety of vintage stores, local design shops and many a famous designer.  We happened upon this store on one of our routine walks around the Village, saw the sign, heard interesting music and entered.  The store is essentially a collection of stalls featuring eclectic objects made by local artists and designers.  Funky jewelry, yummy smelling soap, bags reflecting NYC scenes, handmade leather wallets, music by local artists, you can find all this and more.  Not knowing what to expect, we thought things would be really pricey.  You can find indulgences big and small and this is an interesting place to peek into for your holiday gift giving and beyond.

The Bombay Store in Mumbai – A Trove of Unique Gifts

By Lakshmi:

Who?  Anyone who wants to pick up gifts that are unique or buy one of a kind home decor items.

What? The Bombay Store, a trove of unique items from all over India.

How? The Bombay Store whose tagline is “Discover a New India” has multiple locations in Mumbai and beyond.  I am partial to their store in Fort, Mumbai, but you can shop at any of their locations listed at the link below:

Why?  Every time I am in India, a stop at one or more locations of the Bombay Store is an absolute must do on my list.  What brings me back to this store time and again is their extensive array of beautiful items representing a variety of art and talent from all over India at prices that do not break the bank.  From fabric wall hangings to intricate wood work panels, scarves and ties to beautiful bed spreads, handmade paper to candles, Ganesha idols playing musical instruments or doing yoga, the list runs the gamut.  Not only are these beautiful purchases, but the items I have adorning my home have given me so much joy over the years.

Even if you don’t want to buy anything, a walk through the Bombay Store is just a visual delight of colors, textures and shapes.  But, for that, you don’t just need to limit yourself to the Bombay Store.  Any visit to Mumbai or for that matter any other city in India is simply a feast for all senses.
